Facts:In southern Turkey, a folk remedy known as katran is produced from cedar extract. It’s traditionally been used to protect buildings and boats against insects and fungi, and as an antiseptic for treating wounds in people and livestock. Historians have found mentions of cedar forests in decline dating back to the third millennium B.C. The Adopt-a-Peak program of the Appalachian Mountain Club is looking for citizen scientists to observe and report on fall foliage changes over successive seasons. The stands of yellow birch and mountain ash under study are located on mountains in Maine, New Hampshire, New York, and Vermont. You can also visit the EOL species pages for yellow birch and mountain ash.
You can also search the database at the National Phenology Network to find tree species to monitor. The extensive database includes the Eastern Redcedar, Juniperus virginiana, one of twenty plants used nationally to calibrate climate-change data.
